Our name, Bread & Roses, comes from the title of a song written about the 1912 Lawrence Mill Strike. The song sings of the courageous women who participated in strikes, calling for bread for themselves and their starving families. The following lines from the song capture their plea as well: “For the people hear us singing: Bread and Roses! Bread and Roses!” “Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!”
