Bread & Roses fulfills its mission to ease the hungers in our community, providing guests with a hot, nutritious evening meal and distributing food, clothing and basic life necessities to those most in need. As we enter the next decade, which has begun with economic uncertainty and presented hardships for our community’s families, can you help us?

 

Bread & Roses has been providing free meals, clothing, hygiene products, childcare supplies and medical needs to the Lawrence community since 1980. Our soup kitchen, open five nights a week, prepares a three-course meal, homemade soup to dessert, for more than 150 people – men, women and children who have to be or want to be here.

 

A dedicated staff of volunteers accomplishes many tasks and, without them, we and the clientele we serve could not survive. Through the help of volunteers with heart we provide a safe and friendly environment for our guests to enjoy their evening meals of hot, home-cooked food. Pleasantly decorated tables fill two dining rooms where guests engage in conversation, with each other as well as with our volunteers. When the need arises we provide enough food from our emergency reserves for a family to get through to the end of the month. We find a warm coat for a cold person. We will find shelter for a guest on a frigid night. We treat all our guests with compassion, respect and dignity, regardless of their circumstances.

 

Bread & Roses reaches out to the poorest and neediest members of Lawrence: families who are hungry; individuals who are suffering from chronic disease; victims of fire, mental illness and abuse; the unemployed; and human beings who are isolated and need basic necessities.

 

Our community has been deeply affected by the current economy, and is in need of our assistance now more than ever before. Bread & Roses undertakes a tremendous financial burden to provide the food and services that we offer. We neither request nor accept federal or state funding but, rather, rely solely on local support from our surrounding communities, philanthropic donations and assistance from organizations like yours.
